Important Information About Your Drinking Water

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER

A public health hazard exists in the Jericho Water District distribution system due to service line leaks at the White Oaks Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (Facility) located at 8565 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury. The District was notified of this situation by the Facility, who have been working to repair the leaks.

What should I do? What is being done?

There is nothing that the public needs to do at this time. Since being notified of the potential hazard, the District has been working with local and state health officials to coordinate their efforts and instruct the Facility in how to correct the problem. The Facility has hired a plumbing contractor to make the necessary corrections to the water services that provide water to the site for drinking and personal use, as well as fire protection. The repairs will be made within the next few days. The District, as a precaution, has increased the chlorine residual in the distribution system in the areas around the Facility.

What happened?

The water services to the Facility were installed over 40 years ago. Due to the age of the pipes, several small leaks occurred within the meter vault. As was the standard at that time, these large vaults were not designed to drain. Without the ability for water to naturally drain out, the vault filled with water, thereby creating a possible backflow condition. Once the leak was discovered, a temporary pump was installed in the vault and the water was pumped out, mitigating the threat of a back siphonage. The pump’s operation is being closely monitored and will continue to operate until the new water services have been installed and the old service discontinued at the main.

A second notice will be posted when the repairs have been completed.
